The U.S. is particularly interested in the technology, particularly as oil prices continue to climb in an increasingly volatile market. Whereas Japan once looked to the United States for knowledge and aid in modernizing the country, the Japanese are now able to set the standard for the U.S. And the rest of the world with respect to high-speed rail.

The advent of high-speed rail furthers what cultural theorist Michel de Certeau calls the "insidiousness" of consumption. "It insinuates itself everywhere, silently and almost invisibly, because it does not manifest itself through its own products, but rather through its ways of using the products imposed by a dominant economic order" (de Certeau 1984 qtd. In Storey 140). People were able to travel through Japan, obviously, before the existence of the bullet train, but once introduced it gradually became a central feature in the country.
