As our kayak flipped over, and my shoulder touched the water, I had a brief moment of panic. Looking back, I realize that the feeling of fear that swept over me at that second was the feeling that our instructor wanted all of us to feel. He wanted us to know how to refrain from panicking. When we concluded our kayak experience with our lake adventure at the end of the weekend, I was glad that I knew what flipping over felt like, and how to get out from under a tipped boat safely. Another topic that our safety class covered was how to manage the boat with a dog in tow. Once again, this topic proved important, as our black lab joined us in this adventure.

After successfully completing the safety course, we were more than ready to hit the open water with our new kayak licenses in hand. Eagerly, we rented two tandem kayaks, but underestimated the difficulty of dealing with them on land. After two hours, we were finally able to load them in the truck and head to the lake. Of course, getting to the lake resulted in a bit more trouble of the canine sort. Our black lab suddenly lost interest in kayaking, and developed a keen appreciation for chasing birds.

Eventually, our friend and I got the dog and the kids in the Kayaks. From that point, until the moment when we realized that we were lost at sea, we had a wonderful time. I remember paddling toward one side of the lake, hearing the girls laughing, and watching the dog's fur ruffling in the gentle wind. Of course, we flipped over once, but this time I did not have a sense of fear, but quickly got our from under the boat, righted it, and climbed in, along with the rest of my boat mates -- including the dog! But soon we realized the sky getting dark and the wind getting harsh. The rest of the story is history.

But it is a history that continues to live in my memory. I believe this memory is so fresh for me because the experience, overall, was infuriating and exhausting. Despite the fact that this is how I look back on it today, I do have to admit that while I was out on the lake I was scared. Though we never went kayaking again after that day, I learned a very valuable lesson from this experience -- always take the safety course......
