According to a study by Nadler & Tushman, there are inter-personal connections that if made, can help a leader to gain even more commitment, loyalty, and effort from his/her team. These actions include expressing personal support and commitment to others, empathizing with others, energizing others, and expressing confidence in others (Williams, 1998, p.211). If these actions were employed along with the top-down approaches of Kouzes and Posner, then the intangible qualities of personal commitment and solidarity to the group may be fostered on a greater level.

In conclusion, Kouze and Posner set forth some helpful tenets which should be considered and used when appropriate by leaders across the globe. However, to think of these five tenets as the sole tenets to be followed and that they should be followed in all circumstances severely limits the practicality and validity of their methods.

There are, indeed, times when what they advise simply will not be feasible and another course of action (possibly a course of action which completely contradicts their theory) is necessitated and it is up to the leader to know when to lead by example, when to lead through buy-in, and when to simply lead. A good leader will recognize this and will most likely utilize the Kouzes and Posner model for what it is worth and then understand that it is not a clear cut "how to" manual. In the postmodern day and age of rapidly changing conditions, needs, and resources, there is certainly substantial room for deliberated deviation from this model in order to truly lead in each and ever situation.
