These positions generally pay well. The outlook for financial analysts is good, as openings are expected to increase rapidly over the coming years. However, there is strong competition for the position as well, meaning that candidates will need to have substantial qualifications. Candidates should have at least a bachelor's degree, but often an MBA in finance and/or a CPA designation as well. For most openings, experience is required. Many financial analyst positions are specialized, so a candidate would need expertise in a particular industry or country in order to qualify for the position.

Three different companies were surveyed. Goldman Sachs had the greatest number of openings. Most of their openings were at the entry level, and they indicated that there was strong competition for these openings such that candidates would need to have the highest possible qualifications. Of the three companies surveyed, Goldman Sachs offered the highest starting wages and had an excellent benefits program.

The California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) has a handful of openings, and pays a fair wage. CalPERS also offers a competitive bonus structure and some distinct benefits including favorable mortgages.

They also had a unique system for qualifying employees, as all employees must pass a round of testing that is mandatory for all California public service employees. While this testing is not directly related to the position, it is required of all candidates. For that reason, many candidates come from within the California Public Service.

The San Diego Community Credit Union had just one opening for a financial analyst. They offered the lowest pay and benefits package for the three surveyed. They also had the lowest qualifications, although their open position does require 3-5 years of experience in the field. That said, they expect competition will be intense. All three firms indicated that not only were there ample opportunities in the field, but that there were plenty of candidates to fill those opportunities.
