United States, the scope of responsibilities of a sheriff varies across states and counties. The sheriff is most frequently a chosen/elected county official, serving as the arm of the parish court or county. However, some cities, a good example being the Commonwealth of Virginia, have a sheriff's office with dual purpose as the arm of the city jail and court. The sheriff can also perform court duties. These may encompass such functions as managing the city or county jail, providing courtroom security as well as prisoner transportation, assisting in serving warrants including serving process. Within urban areas, the sheriff may be constrained to those duties. Numerous other sheriffs as well as their deputies may serve an area as the main police force. In addition to also having jurisdiction over the whole county even in what some may consider more urban areas (Sullivan, Rosen, Schulz & Haberfeld, 2005, p. 123).

In the U.S., there can be probation officers in varying levels: the city level, county, state level, or federal level, anywhere there exists a court of able jurisdiction. From the time when the abolishment of parole began in the federal system by the year 1984, there are basically no parole officers that exist on the federal level.

Nevertheless, there is a minor and decreasing amount of parolees still being overseen that were sentenced prior to 1984, or court-martialed military peoples, and United States probation officers serve the role of parole officers within that capacity. The majority of jurisdictions need officers to have a four-year Bachelor's degree, preferring a Graduate degree for complete consideration for positions of probation officer on the federal level.

Probation officers can and will fulfill the job of a parole officer if needed. They are a valuable and integral aspect of law enforcement. They also sometimes serve dual purposes as much like a many law enforcement jobs require. They must supervise and communicate any updates of people they are responsible for and is a big part of their responsibilities.

State and municipal police officers are given general police duties. They respond to emergencies as well as patrol regular routes looking for suspicious activity. In addition, they may spend a lot of time helping citizens, finalizing paperwork. Supplementary duties include guiding traffic at things like public events and vehicle accidents, administration of first aid to injured people, as well as inspecting thefts.
