Reflection found this book more beneficial than ordinary books on leadership, because it encourages the reader to start their own journey toward success by stepping outside of their comfort zone and trying new things. While most leadership books focus on steps managers can take to lead better (like delegating tasks and prioritizing information) this book takes a completely different approach. Instead it encourages those that read it to view leadership as a connection between the mind, body and spirit. While this concept may seem foreign or uncomfortable to some, the whole idea behind the book is to encourage people to explore their inner being and step out of their comfort zone.

The main points include taking action each and every day, not simply to explore one's own ability but also to encourage others to do the same. By doing so a person becomes a leader because he or she inspires others to achieve their best. This is a valid point, one that if followed may encourage more trust in organizations. It certainly encourages leaders to take steps to trust their incumbents more and to allow their employees more responsibility or authorship over tasks assigned within the organization.
The authors also suggest that once a leader masters these skills he or she can encourage others to do the same. Exploring one's spirituality according to the author's, will lead to greater satisfaction and help the leader intrinsically motivate people within an organization to succeed. This is not a concept that is new, but Bolman & Deal certainly introduce it in a new and exciting manner. Even those who are not religiously oriented or those comfortable with alternate forms of leadership may find the ideas presented practical and useful.

Conclusion

While Bolman & Deal present a new approach to leadership, the principles supporting their leadership guide are well grounded and similar to many contemporary leadership models. Bolman & Deal seem to encourage a more democratic leadership style, one that focuses on horizontal leadership and knowledge sharing within the They simply presented their ideas in an enlightened manner. Their points suggest that unless a leader is comfortable exploring his or her own inner spirit, they will be unable to encourage others to do the same. This is an interesting point, one deserving more attention especially as organizations continue to be more diverse in the global marketplace......
