Its first objective was to fight against Israel and its allies. However in 1985, Israel began a retreat, leaving the security zone to the Lebanese-Christian South Lebanon Army. In 1989 they subscribed, along with other Lebanese parties, the Taif agreement, which would begin the end of the civil war. Finally, in 2000, Israel retired all the troops from the south of Lebanon, under the international border.

Since the beginning of the conflicts many governments have tried to stabilize the political as well as the social situation of the country.
