Due to the hearing impairment, there will be included next to the Braille pictures of American Sign Language to correspond with the vocabulary words presented in Braille. With his vision being impaired, but entirely gone, this will help him better connect Braille words and phrases with sign language, which he is already quite fluent in. Thus, this lesson is essentially helping him gain more tools to help him read and increase his vocabulary to the appropriate 5th grade level.

The activities of the lesson will revolve around a single reading packet. First, the student will read a section of reading comprehension in Braille. There are a number of options to choose from, but for this student the reading will focus on science in order to capture his attention. Then, the student will study the vocabulary words associated with that reading. After this, the student will complete worksheets where there are two sections.
First, the student is asked to fill in the blanks and use the context clues in the surrounding sentence written in Braille to determine which vocabulary word is most appropriate. Next, the student will fill out a worksheet focusing on short answer responses that will require the student to have to use the information learned in the reading comprehension piece that was read earlier. There will be five short answer questions to respond to in writing. Assessments are important to gauge how successful the lesson was. Thus, these assessments will be based on the marked answers on whether or not the vocabulary words were matched with the correct sentences.
