Katharine, what Montaigne means is that inanity which we human beings are full of is one of those things that makes life worth living. The absurdism and comedy in life and in each other are the things that make life so unique and so worthwhile. In returning to your life, your children, your family and friends, I feel you will be able to rediscover this absurdism, the silliness in yourself and in the people around you. I truly believe that is something which will help you to find joy once again in life, as you were someone who, in the past, appreciated jokes and the inane more than anyone else I knew.

More than anything, Katharine, I ask you to look for courage within yourself. What you're currently trying to work through and live with is not easy by any means. Most people we know have not had to suffer through a tragedy such as yours and many others cannot even imagine it. Even so, just because you have this particular status or experience does not mean that you have to give your life and your future over to the tragedy.

Rather, you should work even harder to overcome what this tragedy has done to you and your spirit and the zest for life that once consumed you so heavily. I know that I've blathered on a great deal during this letter. In closing I ask that you remember not to fear death; death is but a passing instant. In not fearing death, I ask that you try to embrace life more closely, and to breathe life in with a more attentive spirit and earnestness. Finally, I ask that in reacquainting yourself with life, you try to re-embrace all the absurdity and comicalness that life has to offer you, as after all, life can be full of pleasant surprises even now. As always, I encourage you to ask me for anything you might possibly need. I promise I will work hard to be a better friend to you; I shall visit more often and right more letters. I promise my next letter will be filled with more jokes in order to put a smile on your face.
