But though the distaste might be the same on both sides, the degree and vehemence with which the two sides are opposed to these two ills are quite different. Both the ACLU and the National Coalition for Sexual Freedom appear to be against the practice of prostitution. Especially in areas where it is illegal (i.e. most of the country, but they also protest against police crackdowns on suspected prostitution areas and harsh punishments for convicted prostitutes (ACLU, 2009; NCSF, 2008). The stated conservative view is far more clear cut: both the Republicans for Family Values website and the American Family Association simply contain no reference to it, ignoring the problem completely (RFV, 2009; AFA, 2007). Often, the concerns of the conservatives dovetail nicely with the goals of the liberals, and vice versa. The two groups are so diametrically opposed in so many instances, it is impossible to keep this from happening. For instance, the need for abortions could be viewed as a social problem, but the availability of abortions solves this, in some people's minds. The same general idea is true with homosexuality -- its only a problem if you think its your business, and it's a total non-issue if you decide its not -- it solves itself by not being a problem. Its odd that the liberals are more laissez-faire......
