Denis and Michael Benthall used the space for productions and actor training. From 1963 -- 76 it was the temporary home of the National Theatre of Great Britain (see Royal National Theatre). Briefly closed due to funding cuts, it reopened in 1983. Again threatened by lack of funds, it was purchased and preserved by a charitable trust in 1998. In 2003 Sir Elton John became the theater's president, a restoration drive was organized, and the formation a new Old Vic company was announced. Directed by the American actor Kevin Spacey, the group is intended showcase new theatrical talent (Old Vic, 2003).

Conclusion

During the 1920s and '30s Lilian Baylis put on all of Shakespeare's plays, opera, and ballet. She and her troop did it all on a shoe string: ginger beer crates made up the scenery, and the casts were so poorly paid that Lilian often made dinner for them in the wings.
but, by the end of her life, she had created the companies that would become the Royal Ballet, the Royal National Theatre and the English National Opera.

English National Opera operates, today, from the largest theatre in London and its employees can buy their own suppers in the small restaurant under the stage. But it has not forgotten where it came from. Operas are in English and the ticket prices, are kept as low as possible. And of course the Company works hard to attract newcomers to opera. Just what Lilian Baylis would have wanted.

If there have been greater contributions to the British arts, it is difficult to place them in light of Lilian Baylis' accomplishments. Her steadfast striving for perfection combined with her love for Shakespeare, opera and ballet still hold the British in rapt attention today......
