NA).

Sebastian Coe, the "star" of the emotive video in London's bid to host the 2012 Olympics, reflects on the fact that watching the Olympics as a child at home in Sheffield, inspired him. Speaking at the Sport Accord conference in Beijing, Coe emphasised the need to use online communities and new media to stimulate young people's interest in sport and activity. He stressed the need to involve youth to be particularly vital during this time "when 22 million children under the age of five and one in 10 school children worldwide [are] overweight, with physical activity and physical education declining in schools" ("Inspired by the 2012" 2007, p. NA). "Our [London's] challenge is to build a relationship with millions of young people over the next five years, not just in the summer of sport in 2012, and connect them with the meaning of sport and the Games like never before," (Ibid.) Coe stresses. The following figures (1 and 2) denote London's location.

Aim and Objectives

Aim

This study "aims" to examine the potential impact of the London 2012 Olympic Games, related to the regeneration of East London.

Before society in Britain can offer genuine hope to change the culture of its country, David Cameron, the Conservative leader, stresses, society first has to change the culture of its politics, to end the state's perceived monopoly over social progress" ("Cameron Tells Parents and" 2007, p. NA). According to this newspaper account, yobbish behaviour in is currently growing in Britain. "Government can't make all the difference on its own," Cameron argues. He notes major social problems exist in Britan and contends that what the government is doing is not, nor can it cure concerns.
What it is doing is "...not working" ("Cameron Tells Parents and" 2007, p. NA).

Tony McNulty, Home Office minister, albeit, does not perceive the problems in society to be as critical as Cameron states. McNulty purports: "David Cameron simply does not get what it means to be plagued by crime and anti-social behaviour and Labour will continue to support communities in their fight to feel safer in their own streets."

Objective One

Depict Current Status of East London

LIVERPOOL' S. Capital of Culture year in 2008 can act as the 'starting gun' for the Olympic Games...," Andy Kelly, staff writer for the Daily Post in Liverpool, states ("OLYMPICS 2012: Capital of" 2005, p. 8). The majority polled regarding London hosting the 2012 Olympics reported they approved the capital's win, however, some individuals expressed concern that: "Liverpool could be left with 'the crumbs from the table' as fears grew of public funds being siphoned off to pay for the sporting extravaganza" ("OLYMPICS 2012: Capital of," 2005, p. 8).

As this study investigates East London's current status in a number of areas, it also examines the status of areas potentially touched by the upcoming games.

Objective Two

Explore details regarding prior Olympic Games, particularly, previously successful Games like Los Angeles during 1984, Barcelona in 1992, Sydney in 2000, and Athens during 2004.

This researcher extracts details from existing records which relate details of previous successful, as well as, unsuccessful Olympic Games. The first Olympic was held during1896 in Athens, Greece. Records exist from the conception of the Olympic Games' competition to the one held in 2004 in Athens, Greece, and all those in between. Years the games were not held due to war are also recorded.

Objective Three:

Relate components contributing to London hosting the 2012 Olympic Games.

Why London? Some question.

Sebastian Coe, the only male runner to win the Olympic 1,500m twice, contends: "The real question is why London ahead of the others.... Sure, we're good enough to stage an Olympics and worthy of doing so, but there are a number of strong candidates, so it comes down to what differentiates us from them and gives London the edge." ("RICHARD BULLICK TALKS to the MAN LEADING LONDON'S 2012 OLYMPICS BID, ATHLETICS LEGEND SEBASTIAN COE: Athletics - Coe Leads from Front" 2004, p. 51; Sebastian Coe 2007).

Coe purports London constitutes the most culturally diverse city; that London is good at organising things; that the country is passionate about sport. According to Coe, no prominent practical problems currently challenge London as host for the 2012 Olympics as the city has reportedly comprehensively addressed the infrastructural issues such as transport and venues" (Ibid.).

Objective Four:

Identify potential impact of the Olympic Games, such as the development of social interactions, traditions, community values and interests of local residents.

Initially, potential impact of the Olympic Games appears to promise to be a positive force for economic good. The long-term economic benefits, as well as, the development of social interactions, traditions, community values and interests of local residents, albeit remains questionable, as true economic costs and social impacts of hosting the Games are unlikely to be revealed until well after 2012 ("London Boom Brings Winners," 2005, p. 37).

Objective Five:

Present potential positive impacts from London hosting

Managing director Nigel Hugill of property developer company, Chelsfield, purports that although it constitutes an array of ambitious scheme, the Olympics will prove beneficial for London. He states the perks will be fourfold..." ("On the Trail of Olympic Gold; LONDON'S BID to HOST the 2012 GAMES OFFERS the PROSPECT of a BONANZA for BIG Business and the SMALL ENTREPRENEUR ALIKE" 2004, p. 40).

A real political will behind the master planning.

The Government will support infrastructure issues of local roads and bus routes.

London will gain further impetus and recognition - an international recognition.

Along with ambitious hotel building, trains and coaches group National Express will "wink" as "an extra [pounds sterling] 415 million will be ploughed into rail projects..." ("On the Trail of Olympic Gold; LONDON'S.....
