Alepho's mother is not so richly described like in Benson's case. Benson's attachment to his mother and his admiration for her and women in general is transpiring again in his stories about the war with the lion and the lioness. First, he presents his father's hero deeds who courageously fought the lion and killed it. His next story will be about the lioness and this time he will places his mother as the lioness' opponent, equally heroic like his father when fighting the lion. The episode of the lower teeth being removed, as tradition of the village that will distinguish them from others is another scene that shows Bensons' appreciation for the opposite sex.

The concept of freedom is also different from what the people in countries wit a democratic regime take from granted. In the refugee camp in Kakuma, after a long and painful journey, one of the boys is writes that he got the conviction they were doomed to be prisoners for the rest of their lives. In the end, they will find out about freedom and its cost, by getting the chance to come to America.

In spite of being hungry most of the time, the boys will start learning English understanding the need to learn the language of the country they saw as their salvation. They left a country where government meant all the evil in the world, war was a permanent status quo, atrocities became things to witness every day and childhood ceased to exist. What they knew as war, was in fact, genocide. It went beyond any barriers of what the civilized world knows as war and unfortunately, they left millions of people there to go on living in a genocide zone that seems to duplicate each day instead of slowly diminishing.

After everything they went through, one might think they could have expected to receive rations, humanitarian help as something they deserved, but they wanted in fact nothing of the sort. The humanitarian help was merely a palliative, they wanted the freedom to pursue their dreams, their aspirations and never too look over their shoulder in fear.
