Oil exploration and extraction has always been a risky business. Significant deposits of crude oil will have to be identified for any petroleum company to stay as a significant player in any region of operation. Lukoil is a relatively new operation when compared to the other established players such as ExxonMobil, Shell and BP. In addition, there are also many international companies such as Saudi's Aramco, Venezula's PDVSA and Brazil's Petrobras that enjoy the benefits of being a state run organization and not being subjected to the regulations that are faced by private organization.
