Please view the above cartoon, and discuss the issue of gender and language that this cartoon illustrates. Additionally, describe at least two examples from your own life that demonstrate some differences in language between the genders.
The cartoon illustrates who genders are much more receptive to communication from those of the same gender. They are also much more likely to support the person and their communication if they are of the same gender. The cartoon appears to illustrate that women have a method of communicating that is received much more positively from other women, but may be perceived negatively from men. The opposite occurs when men communicate with other men. Here, women may perceive the communication differently and thus may view the communication style negatively. The cartoon speaks to other underlying issues as it relates to communication. In the cartoon, a woman in the very back of the room does not pay attention when the man is speaking. She instead relegates herself to her paper and appears to not pay any attention the comments that man is making. Another issue illustrated by the cartoon as how the many is using both verbal and nonverbal cues with his communication style.

Two examples in my own life where communication difference where apparent occurred in my high school class room and during a church meeting. Here, my male teachers tended to use a larger amount of voice inflection along with nonverbal cues such as eye contact and pointing. My female teachers appeared to be more subdued, rarely changing voice tone. Likewise during church, male pastors tended to use the stage more, walking and engaging with the congregation in a more intimate manner. Females guests typically stood behind the podium when communicating to the crowd.
