Applying negotiation strategies to address potential workplace conflicts

Negotiation is one of the conflict management strategies and it is defined as a process through which decisions are made among the parties that are interdependent but do not share any identical preferences. Negotiation is initiated in order to try to bring a satisfactory exchange between these parties engaged in conflict. In using negotiation to manage workplace conflict, it is important that the negotiation is geared towards making the outcome a win-win situation. this ensures that all parties in the conflict have to compromise certain aspects and win others in order to resolve the conflict Barki & Jon, 2001.

This way of balancing compromise with accommodation ensures that the parties play an active role in the resolution of the conflict. The parties have to seek cooperation with each other in order to keep in consideration the interests and needs of the other parties in a selfless and submissive way whereby the person relinquishes some of their interests for the other party. In the same way, the other party has to relinquish some of their interests. In negotiation, the parties also have to compromise since they give up part of their interests and needs in order to find a common ground upon which the conflict can be resolved Nadler, Thompson, & Boven, 2003()

A good example of application of negotiation in conflict resolution is in the conflict between nurses and doctors in the facility. This conflict is resolved by ensuring that each of them is provided with their own work station, office supplies and that their roles are clearly stated. These roles are designed in a round-table discussion in the form of a negotiation where the nurses and doctors strive to take the role of complementing each other.

Second are the facts, goals, metrics, policies, procedures and characteristics of the organization. Third are the values and concerns of stakeholders and lastly is the expertise and judgment of the manager Pfeffer & Sutton, 2006()

In order to apply evidence-based management in the workplace, the evidence must be highly reliable and internally valid. This means that it must use consistent ways of measurement in order to give results that would be the same for repeated use in the organization. The evidence should also be applicable to the situation in the organization for it to succeed when used. In the facility, evidence-based management can be used to ensure that decisions made lead to the success of the organization. These decisions could range from how everyday activities are run to more complex decisions such as cost-cutting measures, downsizing and promotions.

Evidence-based management can be used in the organization to make decisions regarding hiring of new members of staff for the facility. Through the use of this decision-making approach, the facility will be able to resist the temptation to make decisions based on the instinct of managers. They will be able to design the recruitment and selection process to be as unbiased as possible to ensure the interviewers choose the best.....
