Once you are in business, it is good to remember that you are the key individual and the only person who is responsible for the success or failure of the venture. This is because unlike big cities where division of labor is the rule, in a small town most businesses are medium or small scale and thus require limited staff and sometimes no workers at all. Iowa State University's Department of Sociology conducted a study in 1994 of small town businesses and found that in a small town, a person running his own business has following essential jobs to take care of:

Own or manage your own business.

Enjoy the challenge of being your own boss. Feel a sense of pride.

Make money.

Contribute to your community.

Make work more compatible with family.

Growth Potential" (Besser 1996)

This study also concluded that in a small town business managers are required to work harder and longer to succeed. Even though work schedule is flexible and one can juggle between work and family, still the working hours can be unpredictably long. The study found that to succeed in a small town, managers "...must be willing to work hard. Work hours are flexible, but many. Business owners and managers average 52 hours per week. A few never go home, clocking in more than 100 hours per week. About one out of six work less than 40 hours per week.
" (Besser 1996) manager in a small town is usually the one person who works the most. He is supposed to do most work himself since work ethics in small town might not exactly leave a good impression on you. Labor is not easy to find and quality of labor is usually an issue. Therefore a manager must "Prepare to do most of the work yourself. In a small town, you can have trouble finding good help. The local work ethic may surprise you - in either direction." (Cathy Goodwin)

Getting to know people is always useful since it helps in extracting feedback that allows further improvement and adjusting. In a small town, people are more transparent and friendly than in a big city but they are equally stubborn and come to some fixed ideas. It is thus important to make a good lasting impression on people in order to succeed. Contribute towards community building in any manner you possibly can. Make people see your business is beneficial to the entire area and not just yourself. This will attract more customers and help in keeping the existing ones......
