Michelangelo, better than most of his contemporaries, who were students of the Florentine tradition, successfully used the natural beauty of the real world in order to honor God.

Michelangelo's influence led to the development of Mannerism as a period of art. Mannerism abandoned the style of art that relied upon depictions of subjects in their natural form and began to depict the subjects in a more harmonious and ideal form. It was characterized by an abandonment of the classical form and the development of a new method of painting and sculpting.

Like all artists, Michelangelo's life and artistic style was transitional.
He began his career adhering strictly to the traditions that he learned during his tenure in the Medici court in Florence but as his career progressed he began to depart from the strict standards that had dominated Renaissance art. As Michelangelo began to use his subjects and figures as depictions of the ideal and not as representations of their natural state he ushered in new era in artistic expression. As he did, artists were freed from the shackles of being mere craftsman and freed to become true artists. Art began to become a form of expression.
