In fact, the band that composed Dixie was banned from performing in the North once the song became the Confederate anthem.

Because of their racial subject matter and parodied depiction of African-Americans, the minstrel show can be seen as emphasizing the truly warped views of many Americans during the Civil War through Civil Rights era. However, some suggest "shows" are still performed today in the case of white rappers or white jazz performers who try to perform a brand of music that was given to the United States by African-Americans ("The Minstrel Show").
