This was a mixed methods study that was applied to the topic of school psychology

The purpose of Powell et al.'s (2008) journal article was to show the benefits of mixed method study using the field of school psychology as an example.

The overall research question was whether mixed methods is more beneficial than qualitative or quantitative methodology alone in addressing scientific research. The specific example that the authors gave was reliance on two different studies (one qualitative, the other quantitative) that used bullying as their topic

Using the three examples provided by Powell et al. (2008): The qualitative study reviewed children's perceptions on bullying. The quantitative study used a questionnaire to assess how often children experienced bullying behaviors as victim or perpetrator as well as their feelings of safety and the amount of adult support available during the bullying incident.


The two studies, if used in synthesis, support and add to one another in that the quantitative provides scientific layer of support to the qualitative whilst the qualitative provides the rich emotional background to the thesis.

The authors also provided a mixed methods study to show its value to school psychology. Their example investigated the impact of a peer support service in a school with high rates of bullying. The authors combined interviewing (qualitative) with a questionnaire (quantitative), and its strengths lay in the fact that the two in unison provided the researchers with a more balanced, truer picture. The quantitative study, when used alone, provided a dismal picture of the support service; it seemed to be weak. The interview, however, showcased its strengths. The two studies complemented one another and provided a clearer account of the program.
