Michael J. Fox Foundation

Perspective of Learning and Growth

The Michael J Fox Foundation is the world's largest non-profit organization for the funding of research that is dedicated to finding a cure for the estimated five million people living with Parkinson's disease. The organization's primary objectives can be summarized as serving a collaborative role in the industry, giving patients a voice, facilitating clinical trials, and coordinating grassroots movements (The Micael J Fox Foundation, N.d.). The organization can implement the balanced scorecard approach to gain a more comprehensive perspective of how it is performing along its primary stated objectives. One key component of the balanced scorecard model is the learning and growth perspective. The learning and growth perspective sets out to answer the question of how the organization must learn and improve to meet its vision and should consider what it can do better in order to (Savkin, 2015):

Improve business processes

Achieve financial goals

Using this framework, various metrics and objectives within this perspective can be defined. For example, regarding satisfying customer needs, the customer can actually be thought of in different ways. On one hand, typically the customer is thought of as the one who pays for a good and service.

The customer could be thought of as those who give charity donations as well as those who are diagnosed with Parkinson's disease (PD). The emphasis in a non-profit is generally on the population that the organization serves. However, at the same time it also has an obligation to satisfy the needs of the donors relative to their expectations.

A non-profit organization can blur some of the lines that are in the balanced scorecard model however the model is entirely flexible and can be easily customized. The fact that the balanced scorecard can be used in such a wide array of applications serves as one of its primary strengths. For example, the donors and the patients themselves could both be thought of as different classes of customers. The donors could have one set of metrics that measure the overall satisfaction with their donation by measures such as communication and the organizations overall performance. For example, the communications to the donors should be phrased in a language appropriate to them.

"Many donations to the nonprofit organizations are made by for-profit companies. Executives from….....
