Rick Rilley's essay "Nothing but Nets," Stanley Fish's essay "But I Didn't Do It" and David Wolman's essay "Time to Cash Out: Why Paper Money Hurts the Economy" all address contemporary issues and are all meant to emphasize how apparently simple ideas can bring reform to society. All of these essays are directed at raising public awareness concerning concepts that many people today currently believe to be insignificant when compared to the world's greater goal to experience progress through technology and finances.

Rilley's thesis deals with making it possible for the masses to understand how some small interventions can save lives and can help individuals combat maladies that claim thousands of lives every year. The writer concentrates on producing solid evidence with regard to how a sum as small as $10 can protect a family from contracting malaria. By simply buying a net coated with insecticide that costs between $4 and $6 and by using another few dollars to ship it to Africa, one can practically provide as many as four people with protection from the deadly disease.

Rilley's use of ethos is somewhat debatable, as it seems difficult to determine the exact role that he plays in informing the world about the deadly aspects of malaria and of how a simple net can protect people's lives. However, he compensates through pathos and logos by emphasizing that individuals in privileged areas have access to a wide range of resources and contributing is not necessarily a difficult job. His example of a person buying a Beastie Boys CD for $20 instead of using this money to provide an African child with more chances of contracting malaria is certainly influential.

Fish relates to how influential bodies in former U.S. slave states have recently started to express interest in acknowledging the damage that the authorities in these respective states have done to African-Americans. His thesis largely focuses on the idea that simply accepting a wrongdoing is sometimes extremely important, both for victims and for perpetrators, regardless or not if the individuals involved are not actually responsible for the respective acts.

Fish mainly uses Ethos as a tool to reach out to people and to get them to understand the important role they can play in changing the world. The civilized society wants to emphasize its deep understanding of morality and agreeing to apologize for actions performed by one's predecessors can sometimes be more than enough.

Wolman's article is intended to emphasize how physical money have come to represent one of the principal reasons why the contemporary society suffers. The column primarily deals with how the contemporary society has the tools to make the change from physical money to emoney but is unable to do so because people cling on to the past.

While Wolman also addresses the ethos and pathos aspects of his essay, he mainly concentrates on the logos part. He brings on information regarding how many developed countries such as the U.S. continue to fabricate physical money in spite of the series of problems (the financial and the environmental damage) that the process brings on.
