Motivation in the Workplace

My needs are being satisfied by a combination of being provided with the opportunity to do something that I am particularly fond of and being given a satisfactory sum of money for the respective activity. My life has largely been based on a trial-and-error system in which I came across a series of experiences and gradually filtered them until I was satisfied with my condition.

My first jobs involved enthusiastic managers who seemed to believe that bonuses are one of the most effective methods to motivate employees. As a consequence, they were inclined to encourage employees to do everything in their power in order to finish their projects earlier. Profits are obviously one of the most important things in a business and managers are thus sometimes inclined to believe that by providing employees with appealing bonuses they are more likely to make the business as a whole experience progress. While this might be true in some cases, the reality is that every business is an unique entity and that its well-being depends on a series of factors that an individual is unlikely to find in other similar businesses.

I was initially one of the people who thought bonuses were a great incentive and who would often ignore particular aspects of my well-being with the purpose to earn as much money as I possibly could.
As time passed I discovered that I could also be productive if I was doing things that I liked. In some cases I would lose money as a consequence of trying to focus on things that I enjoyed doing. I actually got to the point where my salary went down significantly as a result of me wanting to concentrate on concepts I enjoyed about my job.

My life and all the work I did during my existence as an adult provided me with the opportunity to gain a complex understanding of the relationship between finances and doing something that you like. The reality is that managers need to develop a good understanding of their employees in order for them to have an influence on their productivity.

I noticed that bonuses play an important role in encouraging employees who are in charge of routine activities. In contrast, employees who need to engage in creative activities can actually suffer as a result of working on a commission-based….....
