The behaviors observed directly were measured using a variety of scores and positive and negative adult interactions, child affect ratings, and a quality of life survey were gauged as well. The outcome revealed a significant difference in Mindy's behavior as a result of incorporating things that pleased Mindy and things that Mindy related to into the school environment along with an increase in positive praise.

In my opinion, the outcome of this study is not surprising. As a student, I always succeeded in the classes where the teacher provided positive feedback and where I felt like I could somehow relate to the material. Accordingly, a big part of me wondered what was so special about this particular case study. Do we really need a case study and a fancy title like PBS in order to know what common sense and our own personal educational experiences have already confirmed? Additionally, I debated switching my reading to something more glamorous. This study not only contains what I could have told you as a high school freshman, but the facts of it are not nearly as titillating as some of the other articles I stumbled across when researching violence in schools.

Then, I really examined the question: "Is there utility in this study? If so, what is it?" I came to the conclusion that this study is significant as we, as a society, are trying desperately to find grandiose solutions to violence on our campuses. This study shows the power of positive thinking and, specifically, the power of positive behavioral intervention. Of note though is the fact that to do this requires teachers to be able to identify the students whom need this help and there is no guarantee that each student will be responsive to such support. Yet, given what might occur if teachers and/or parents don't respond to a student's needs, perhaps we need to train our professionals in this power and in truly how to recognize those individuals whom could truly benefit from such strategic interventions. Perhaps then, we can divert that student's violent behavior before it escalates to the point of murder or, I shudder to say, mass murder, torture, and suicide as we have all too often seen in modern years on our elementary schools, our junior highs, and our universities......
