Such a presence exists without the negative energy that an association with the pain-body often brings. Tolle notes a session with a patient who relied significantly upon focus on the pain-body in her own life, and in moving to eliminate this she emanated a much lighter presence. Upon leaving the session, another individual entered and noted the tangible feeling of bad energy in the room, which had been expelled from the woman during her session in her realization that she need not focus on the negative, thereby offering her a lightness of self.

Tolle notes that pain-body and ego need each other to thrive. They trigger each other when an individual overreacts in a physical situation, bringing undue stress upon themselves and unneeded chaos into their lives. In understanding this, can one begin to attempt to break free of a life led by the pain-body.

The pain-body, Tolle notes will continue to arise and attempt to break free into action consistently throughout an individual's life, but it is in how we deal with this arising that sets us apart from many others. When focus is brought to the pain-body, Tolle notes that true presence of being can rise above it if our mind's focus is on the lightness of self we have acquired through living presently and not in accordance with the pain-body.
