The WHNP is important because they can take the time to educate patients on health matters and establish a rapport that makes the patient feel comfortable and at ease.

II. TRAINING and CERTIFICATION

Women's Health Nurse Practitioners can work in various settings from private practice, hospitals, universities, clinics and other various medical settings. To become a WHNP, the person must first complete the requirements to become a registered nurse (RN). This can be done by obtaining a four-year bachelor's degree in nursing. After the student completes the four-year nursing degree and passes state licensing, studies can begin to become a Nurse Practitioner by obtaining a master's degree or a post master's degree certificate. This is considered advanced level training and the student enters a program that specializes in the field she wishes to practice in, such as women's health. The requirement for a master's degree hasn't always been in place. There are many nurse practitioners who do not have a master's degree, but it is important to note that because of the nursing shortage many nurses who have been practicing for years can be grandfathered in. Although they do not require an advanced degree, they are required to complete continuing education courses in their particular field of training.
