Systematic Research Review

Nursing Handoffs

This is the topic I chose. I can redo the topic. Just let me know.

Nursing handoffs are kind of report among two clinicians responsible for patient care. Nursing handoffs provide an integral part for the transference of patient information from one healthcare provider/clinical practice to another. While effective handoffs become an instrumental part to successful quality patient care, ineffective nursing handoffs can cause not only problems for those that transfer the information, but also may pose a threat to the safety of the patient. Things like treatment delays, medical errors, inappropriate treatment, even care omissions may happen as a direct result of miscommunication that happens during ineffective nursing handoffs. When such incidents occur, longer stays, increased costs, and readmissions increase in frequency.

Articles chosen for this review are 2012 and after, found through PUBMED. The articles are four in total and discuss rates of nursing errors, handoffs-related errors, research and evidence of ineffective and effective nursing handoff strategies, and the importance of providing effective nursing handoffs for quality patient care.

There are the selected Articles and if you don't' want quotes let me know. I selected these quotes:

"Ineffective handoffs have been identified as a barrier to patient safety and quality and as a key area for improvement.
Handoffs require a process for effective transfer of critical information" (Thomas & Donohue-Porter, 2012, p. 116).

"Verbal handoffs serve important functions beyond information transfer and should be retained. Greater consideration is needed on analyzing handoffs from a patient-centered perspective" (Staggers & Blaz, 2012, p. 247).

"In addition to structured tools, bedside rounds at the end of change-of-shift handoffs serve many functions. Nurses can introduce the oncoming nurse and address patients' concerns, giving them an opportunity to be involved in their care" (Halm, 2013, p. 158).

"A standardized nursing handoff form was designed and implemented to improve handoff process, and rates of nursing errors were measured to determine the effectiveness of the intervention" (Zou & Zhang, 2016, p. 61)......
