Nursing

Letter of Introduction

As an advance practice nurse, I intend to apply my education and professional experience to improving patient outcomes. A holistic nursing philosophy and commitment to caring are the crucial components of my professional character. I also recognize the importance of nurse education and leadership in providing the organizational culture that promotes healing, supports nurses, and advocates for the well being of all patients. My personal nursing philosophy also recognizes the value of diversity.

I believe that health and wellness have personal and cultural dimensions and that it is important for all nurse practitioners to acknowledge the diversity of their patients and resist assuming that all patients have the same emotional and spiritual needs. Advance practice nurses have an ethical obligation to learning about their patients' backgrounds, as well as learning their specific responses to pain and illness. Nursing is a career of lifelong learning, too meaning that advance practice nurses like me will always be developing their professional skills and their skills of emotional intelligence and personal integrity.

Furthermore, I believe advance practice nursing is a unique discipline dedicated to fusing the best of theories of caring with evidence-based practice. The role of the nurse has shifted considerably over the years, with increasing attention being paid to the science of nursing and to the diversity within the profession.
With patients at the center of all nursing care, it is critical to remember not to divert energy and resources away from the primary goal of caring for patients. Yet caring for patients must always be accomplished in a manner consistent with evidence and best practice. What follows is my personal philosophy of nursing.

Personal Philosophy

My philosophy of nursing is grounded in theories of caring and holistic nursing. A good bedside manner is the most critical component of nurse practitioners because patients have needs that transcend the immediacy of their acute care. Cultural sensitivity, emotional support, and attitudes toward health, healing, pain, and death are all important aspects of developing a sound bedside manner. Bedside manner does not come through systematic training and education so much as it does through patients, compassion, and practice.

My nursing philosophy is holistic, meaning it takes into account issues like workplace satisfaction and organizational culture. Good nurse leadership and management in health care institutions can promote best practices and bedside manner. Nurses who are supported by their staff and managers are more likely to help their patients thrive in the health care environment. Therefore workplace satisfaction is a primary goal for all health care institutions.
