It has led America down a path that can only be described as self-indulgent, hypocritical, and dangerous. Many people believe that our actions around the world have led to the hatred that many people and countries share of our country, and may have even held lead to the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. The terrorists clearly hated America and Americans, and they showed it in the worst way possible. That hatred has not gotten any less intense in the years since the attacks. The American aggression in Iraq and Afghanistan only helps keep the hatred simmering, and it seems that it is only a matter of time before it flares up again in this country, fanned by the Iraq war and American indifference to our own policies overseas. Hertsgaard shows this American arrogance in the reaction many foreigners have to American tourists in their country, like the conceited Texan who insisted everything was bigger in Texas. It is no wonder that so many people in other countries dislike the "ugly American" who travels overseas and is totally ignorant about the country they are visiting.
Hertsgaard is right, we are ignorant about the world, but what is more frightening, we are ignorant about our country's position in the world, and what it means, and this is a dangerous, even deadly, form of ignorance. This arrogance and surety about the superiority of our own position translates to a distrust and anger in many other countries, and it is a dangerous position for the government to take, because it increases animosity against us, and creates friction and misunderstanding in the world. It would be better if our country could stop being so hypocritical and overbearing, and could attempt to alter its foreign policy to be fairer and more balanced. That might make us seem less of a bully to the rest of the world, and it might keep Americans a little safer, too......
