Richard Le Gallienne, however, shows a Khayyam who may have liked to look at the stars but was far more contented to find peace and happiness in this world than in the next: "Look not above, there is no answer there; / Pray not, for no one listens to your prayer; / Near is as near to God as any Far, / and Here is just the same deceit as There." With these verses, Khayyam represents a primarily atheistic vision of life, one in which no God exists except some deceitful spirit (an evil or devil?) that permeates life so fully that there is no escape from it. It is a dark and depressing vision, one that paints an even more complex of Khayyam.

In conclusion, Omar Khayyam was a brilliant mathematician and astronomer who also wrote verses that characterized slices of life. His style of writing was simple -- organized into quatrains (verses of four lines), he expressed thoughts on varying subjects, which have in turn been interpreted and translated in various ways. Each interpretation/translation shows a side of both the translator and the poet, so that must ultimately wonder where the true Khayyam begins and ends.
