Organization Change Leadership

Every organization has a culture observed in daily operations. Organizational culture oftentimes influences the extent of performance and success (Burke, 2008). For instance, the visit to county jail and federal prison showed a difference in culture. The new federal prison suggested that the management intends to establish tight security. On the other hand, the county jail had established a culture where jailers freely interacting even with staff members. For many organizations, culture should be handed down from before current employees as they join an organization. According to head of OD group in Proctor and Gamble, culture introduced by the founders should be handed down even to future employees.

Cummings and Worley (2005) observed that organizational culture plays a big role in managing an organization. First, it sets the standards for all stakeholders involved in the organization. For instance, the management will always want to encourage a certain train trend that is associated with the way it operates. This is because it is the culture of the company to perform and operate in that trend. Rich cultures lead organizations to success while low standard cultures have low yields. In BA's case study, the management adopted a new culture since it was richer and more productive than the previous one (Cummings & Worley, 2005).


It is not always the culture of an organization is effective. Sometimes there needs to be some changes to improve operations. When changing organizational culture, it is wise to begin with the easier aspects and finish with the difficult ones. This is because change can be difficult to accept, especially among diversified employees (Cummings & Worley, 2005). Therefore, aspects such as behavior can precede and then values, beliefs and attitude will follow. Organizational change could be essential since it is aiming at improving performance. Culture had to change in British Airways because the management wanted better performance. It prioritized customer service, which was not necessarily looked into before this change.

Before introducing change to an organization's culture, there is a need to understand some concepts. Burke (2008), states them as artifacts, espoused beliefs, values and other assumptions. By identifying these concepts, they will play a major role in planning the change. If change is not handled properly, it may result in severe negative effect to members of the organization.
