For instance, if companies are only measuring using statistics of economic gain, they are leaving out important information about the type of leadership that the organization has, perhaps even some steps for improvement. Knowing what standards should be measured in the benchmarking process, then, is crucial for managers, who must often take up conversations with superiors about whether or not the testing that is being done is relvant. Furthermore, it is also necessary for managers to be careful when interpreting the data for the benchmarking process. Being sure that statistics have been done properly, and remember that correlated variables do not necessarily mean a connection between these variables is crucial. Despite its drawbacks, however, benchmarking is crucial to the future of organizations, but it should be done in a way that encourages managers and reports data scientifically.

Effectiveness

What does it take to make an organization affective? Hazy argues that viewing leaders in context will allow one to determine whether or not they are really having an effective impact. In this view, the professor suggests that the leader is just one part of a rather involved system, and that the leader needs to recognize this before an organization becomes effective or before that person can be an effective leader in that organization.

Many variables relate to how effective an organization is. Its employees are one of those variables, but measuring the effectiveness or an organization must take into account each variable. Also, different realizations of the term "effective" can be made, which further complicate the issue. When does a person know when an organization has exhibited behavior that is effective? Some will measure this by sales, and others might look at the number of people coming in each day or word of mouth. Regardless of how the effectiveness of an organization is measured, organizations need to put some sort of measure in place in order to test effectiveness. They also need to understand that the leader is a major reason why so many organizations fail. Leaders in organizations should try to ask themselves about their methods and whether or not they are effective, in addition to showing that effectiveness though tangible measures.
