Having difficulties connecting with other people is part of life. Both Indians and whites have suffered from a lack of communication, between themselves and within their own communities.

Many of the most well-intentioned foster parents failed to communicate with Zits, and now Zits realizes he was as much at fault as some of the people who fostered him. Zits has always felt abandoned by both white and Indian culture because he is treated like an Indian, yet has lived amongst whites and has never been educated in Indian customs. However, despite the fact he feels and has been rejected, this does not make him any less worthy as a person and this does not mean that he should stop trying to connect with others.
