Empathy, responsibility, and reaping the rewards of kindness are critical values, rather than fear of authority. Equally critical to the point-of-view espoused by peacemaking criminologists such as Pepinsky is that criminality is not a natural state, merely an artificially conditioned response to an alienating environment. Criminologists of this school believe that humans are hard-wired born with the capacity to ask for help, and to put a premium on obedience is counter-productive and stifling to this desire.
