Personal Philosophy of Education

My Personal Philosophy of Education in Nursing

Almost 20 years ago I immigrated to United States from the Ukraine. I received my Associate's degree from junior college and then attained my Bachelor degree in nursing. Subsequent to this I entered graduate school and studied Health Sciences with a track in midwifery. Presently I am working on earning another degree in Nursing Administration.

My core values have been shaped by these experiences. Foremost I believe caring is central to everything I do. I believe in promoting health, healing and hope in response to the human condition. I value my personal integrity, which is respecting the dignity and moral wholeness of every person without limitations or conditions. Every person is unique and I respect the differences among individual's ideas, values, and ethnicities. I pride myself in striving for excellence in all thinks I do.

I learn best by doing. I strongly believe that learning occurs during every experience we have, the key is being receptive to these teachable moments as the happen.
I believe that learning is a collaborative process whereby all participants gain knowledge from each other. This benefits everyone by exposing participants to a variety of new ideas and strategies that promote individual growth. I have found that the best learning environments are created in an atmosphere receptive to the needs and attentive to the goals of the participants, each being treated with respect and dignity.

Over time my concept of learning has come to focus around four main areas: independent thinking, group interaction, reaching correct conclusions and stressing the use of learned ideas in new situations. I know that ultimately I must take responsibility for my own learning; however a good learning environment will often inspire my desire to learn. My most memorable experiences in the classroom have been provided by educators who recognized and leveraged the power of their roles. Not only were they preparing tomorrow's nurses; they were also preparing individuals to be self-initiated, independent and self-assured.
