She took roll quietly and quickly based on a seating chart. She never turned her back on the class but rather she made eye contact with every student and walked around the room handing out an assignment sheet. She announced that this was a take-home assignment but they should begin working on it in class "right now." As she worked her way around the room to check on each student personally, she never turned her back but always continued looking around, scanning the room for problems. The assignment was to write about "Why the Emancipation Proclamation Changed America." Students raised their hands when they had a question, and they got right to work.

What were the primary differences between the two teachers? The first teacher did not have control over his classroom. Students can tell if a teacher is confident and assured or not, and it was obvious that the first teacher was not respected. He used poor strategies (he should have had the terms on the board when students came in) and it was obvious the students did not respect his authority. The second teacher had a great rapport with students and by greeting each as they came in showed them she was interested in them and glad to see them. The way in which students got down to business and didn't waste time showed the respect this class had for the teacher.
What does their behavior tell you about the quality of their instructional practice? The behavior of the students in the first class indicated poor deportment strategies and a lack of good instructional tactics. The second teacher smoothly, professionally orchestrated a productive classroom, and it was clear that the students in the second classroom enjoyed being there. What teaching techniques do they use to accommodate diversity? There were two African-American students in the first classroom and several Latinos; but there was so much chaos by all students it was not possible to discern any diversity involvement. In the second classroom, again several African-American students were present and they fit into the classroom dynamics as seamlessly as all other students. Visiting just one day probably isn't enough time to get a picture of how diversity….....
