Nurse Perspective

The profession of nursing offers many different things to many different people. For me, caring and helping people heal has always interested me and has made me feel like I am on the right path I life. The purpose of this essay is to explain my perspectives on nursing and why I feel that this profession is not only of great importance to me and my family, but also positively affecting my community and environment as well. This essay will first show the need for nurses in today's society and how well trained nurses can make a significant impact in the overall quality of life for everyone involved. Also this essay will address Jane Watson's theory of caring as a main academic influence on my nursing approach.

Background

I was born in a relatively poor part of the world in Jamaica where many of the things that are taken for granted are difficult to find. My large family, with many brothers and sisters provided me with a unique background and demonstrated to me at an early age the necessity of cooperation and sharing. This attitude was instilled to me by my parents who taught us to be respectful to others and help those who need and ask for assistance.

Now, many years later, I realize that family is still very important to me and with my own family and children I want to do the very best for them as mine did for me. This caring attitude overflows into my career aspirations and how I have become involved in the nursing profession. I derive great pleasure out of helping those who need help the most.

The Need for Nursing

There is a great demand and need for nurses in today's society as the increase in medicine has provided an opportunity for me, and others looking to contribute to healing society.

Courchane (2011) suggested that a significant increase in nurses is needed to keep America running. She wrote "The need for more nurses in the coming years stems mainly from an aging baby boomer population as well as a generation of aging nurses who will retire. Although the nursing shortage of the early 21st century has been helped temporarily by the economy, many are predicting a shortage in the next several years." This need has shown me that there is a way I can use my talents and will towards a career.

Nursing Influences

Regardless of the nurse shortage, I still would pursue this career due to my nature to care. In researching this profession, Jean Watson's Theory of Care became something which interested me very much and inspired me to further dedicate myself to this profession. Watson's theory described the importance of nursing and their ability to care and inspire patients in order to get the best results. Watson included some interesting techniques in her theory that are spiritual and emotional in nature. Watson's conceptualized nursing as a total mind, body and spiritual experience that uses scientific problem solving with reasonable and caring methods that brings out the best in the nurse and the patient (Current Nursing, 2013).
