Instead of attempting to push sustainability, recycling, reverse logistics on CEOs, and continually persuade them to adopt these strategies, the leaders of these efforts in HP concentrate on selling the business benefits. Significantly reduced costs, greater innovation, greater revenue attained by producing products that are eco-friendly by design all contribute to HP's financial success. HP has the ability to recycle up to 60% of the materials in a printer, making the cost per unit to produce it much lower than competitors. This is one of the primary catalysts of their strength in the printer market for example.

At its most fundamental level however, HP is a model other companies need to emulate. Starting first with setting goals for sustainability and reducing emissions, increasing recycling and creating more opportunities for consumers to recycling, other companies could reap major cost advantages if they followed HP's lead. Second, deciding to quantify or measure the business benefits of recycling, reverse logistics and sustainability is also critically important.
