Today in the present world, the companies' structure has changed and more innovative methods are in demand for the training and development of the employees. Training and development is an important part of the company's operation. Training and development provide the employees with an ability to learn the job and off the job new techniques. It also enables the employees to adapt new abilities through planned schedules. This provides the basis for the prosperity and growth of the company, and the other stakeholders as well. ("Managing and developing," 2005)

Development planning process consists of six major steps which are, the realization of the opportunity to learn ( from employees' side) and to train and develop ( from the manager's and the organization's side), the creation of sources of motivation in relation to development and change, the identification of areas that need development and the setting up of goals, the development of assessment criteria for performance assessment, the development of course of actions that is to be followed in the development process and the submission of feed back from the managers on the development and improvement of employees. (Noe, 2010)

Role of employee

Employee's role in training and development is the receiving role. These are the employees who receive training. The training and development provided to the employees can be for the existing role or for the new role. The training may be both on the job and off the job. The on job training provides the employees with the skills and abilities that are being required to perform various tasks, whereas, off the job training does not have a direct link with the job activities.

Employees are sent for training and development on the basis of their appraisal reports and their existing abilities, or if they are facing difficulties in performing the functions that are a part of their job specification. In the development planning process, the employee has to find the opportunities for his/her development. he/she then has to evaluate that whether he/she can invest his or her time in this development process. After this, the area or goal of development has to be set. After setting the goal, he/she has to decide a course of actions that has to be followed for achieving the goal. The employees have to set an assessment criteria for measuring their performance and they also have to stay accountable to a manager who can help them in setting realistic goals. (Noe, 2010)

Role of manager

The role of the managers is not like the role of employee. The manager is responsible for the development of the performance of the employees, so he will have an inherent interest in the betterment and improvement of the performance of employees. A good manager will like to improve the performance of the employees as it will improve his/her department's performance. A conflict of interest may come here, if the manager….....
