He has something there. Bellamy writes, "During the last decade of the century, such small businesses as still remained were fast-failing survivals of a past epoch, or mere parasites on the great corporations, or else existed in fields too small to attract the great capitalists" (Bellamy 52). Many small businesses cannot compete when large corporations enter their territory, so Bellamy seems to recognize that greed and capitalism will always exist, no matter how advanced our society becomes.

Ultimately, Bellamy's book is a hopeful look into a future utopia that cannot exist. Bellamy wants to believe in the best of humankind, but unfortunately, his utopian world is simply a fantasy world. His ideas are born from a good heart that hopes society can learn from its mistakes and improve on many of the ills he saw in the nineteenth century. That is not the case. Society does not improve; it seems to become more complicated and convoluted as time passes. Surely, Bellamy could not have foreseen two world wars, the nuclear age, and the current world situation.

He could not have foreseen the fast-paced lifestyle of most Americans, who are consumed with consumerism and possessions, rather than family life and social values. Bellamy's world may have been unsatisfactory to him, but it is hard not to wonder what he would think if he actually woke up in today's world. Probably, he would be appalled that so many of his predictions were false, and that our society was so loose and immoral compared to his times. He probably would not believe such things could exist, and would be much happier on his return to his own world. Bellamy's book is interesting, not just because it tries to predict the future, but because Bellamy's woes seem so outdated and childlike now. He writes of a society that he does not approve of, but it does not seem so bad in light of what we have today......
