On the other hand, the socialists were opposed to the concentration of powers in the hands of the capitalist bourgeoisie and demanded the nationalization of major institutions such as the banks and major industries. The ideology of 'nationalism' had gained momentum during the Napoleonic Wars and most nationalists were dissatisfied with the carving of borders in the Vienna Congress without regard to nationalities. The philosophy of communism was still in its infancy but advocated a complete restructuring of the socio-economic order through a revolution of the proletariat (Tankard -- "The 1848 Revolutions in Europe"). Most of all, the French Revolution had ignited the liberating forces of democracy and freedom, which were hard to wish away and could only be suppressed temporarily by the forces of reaction. The industrial workers lived and worked in appalling conditions in the urban centers where unemployment was also rife. A widespread recession in the 1840s, accompanied by major crop failures further worsened the economic conditions leading to inflated prices and a drop in spending powers. By February 1848, about one-fifth of the population of Paris was unemployed; the situation was no different in the major German cities (Tankard -- "The Revolutions of 1848"). In short, the political and socio-economic conditions in most parts of Europe, including France, were ripe for revolution once again by early 1948.
