The Issue of Free Speech and the Relationship between Liberty and SecurityIntroductionIn democratic societies, the balance between individual liberty and public security is critical in order to protect citizens and secure their rights. As our world becomes increasingly interconnected, it is essential for countries to have a system in place where citizens can freely express themselves and have access to legal freedoms, while at the same time ensuring that appropriate measures are taken to secure public peace in accordance with the rule of law. This delicate relationship relies on clear communication and collaboration between all stakeholders involved, as well as a shared set of values and common goals. Without both security and liberty, individuals are unable to enjoy civil liberties or access justice. Ultimately, maintaining this equilibrium is essential for protecting human rights and developing cohesive societies based on mutual understanding. The issue of free speech is currently a controversial topic. While it has long been believed in the West that free speech plays a central role in a healthy democracy, allowing individuals to express diverse opinions on controversial topics while allowing responsible scrutiny and criticism of power-structures, today it is often heard that free speech can be utilized to promote dangerous or objectionable practices that could threaten public safety thereby adding to societal risk. The current battle place for the free speech debate is Twitter, which has served as the town hall of social media for years. Now it is owned by Elon Musk, who has vowed to open up the town hall to those silenced by the social media company’s previous controllers. Some applaud this move while others lament it. However, Musk is correct in promoting free speech because otherwise tyranny of thought is the only possible outcome. What is Free Speech and Why It MattersFree speech helps ensure that all voices can be heard, and that no one is silenced or censored based on their beliefs (Riley). It also allows for the exchange of ideas, which is essential for progress and innovation. By allowing people to express themselves freely and openly, it helps create an environment where people can learn, challenge each other, and come to better understandings. The Founding Fathers valued free speech highly, as it was an essential part of the foundation of the United States. They saw it as a fundamental human right, and as a way to protect the ideals of democracy and individual liberty. Free speech is enshrined in the First Amendment of the US Constitution, which states that “Congress shall make no law … abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press.”Free speech allows people to express themselves and their ideas without fear of censorship or punishment.

…it, citizens are unable to voice their feelings (which is an important part of being human), share perspectives on current events (an important part of staying informed and reasoning for oneself what is going on in the world), protest peacefully (i.e., without having to resort to guns and violence—which happens when people feel so constrained that they cannot even speak freely), and ultimately prevent tyranny (by showing government that it is the people who ultimately have the power and that government exists for the people not the people for government). By ensuring free speech, democracies allow citizens to experience the full range of self-governance by participating in and influencing political discourse. This allows citizens the fundamental right to express their opinions ably and prevent domination from inappropriate leaders or governments. Free speech also defends against government overreach and provides a check on authority. In this way, allowing for unrestrained dialogue serves as a protection against state power without infringing upon its ability to properly enforce laws and regulations for public safety. Thus, free speech is an integral part of civil freedom that guarantees basic rights from subjugation under a tyrannous regime.ConclusionBy understanding the essential relationship between individual freedom of expression and ultimate public security we can ensure the maintenance of both. It is important that governments recognize the integral nature of free speech and promote a culture of free expression if we are to maintain necessary freedoms while respecting our collective right to safety. To that end, governments should promote a culture of free expression by protecting the right to free speech, promoting dialogue and discussion, and encouraging citizens….....
