There are other factors as well that influence whether we are likely offer assistance in an emergency. Research has found that attractive people are more likely to receive assistance than less attractive people in the same plight (Rodrigues & Levine, 1999). Additionally, we are more likely to offer assistance to those who are most like ourselves in various demographic criteria. There are also questions regarding our motivations to help. Researchers are divided on whether helping behavior is essentially altruistic, that is, offered with no benefit for the individual, or egoistic, or done for selfish motives.

Latane and Darley's conclusions that emergency help was less likely to arrive, the more eyewitnesses, may have been a surprise.
