December 24, 2010). Tennessee had "total charges associated with diseases of the heart rise to over three billion in 2006" (Tennessee Department of Health. Cardiovascular Disease. August 2010).

Heart disease is the overt killer of thousands of Tennesseans however, lurking beneath is the single most dangerous epidemic in the state and the nation as a whole, that of Obesity. "Currently, more than 64% of U.S. adults are either overweight or obese, according to results from the 1999-2000 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES)" (the Obesity Society. N.D.). In Tennessee the data is even more striking as the state tracks the national average with "37% of adults considered overweight and another 31% considered obese" (CDC. Tennessee.
