Oral and Written Language Scales, Second Edition: Reading Comprehension and Written Expression

Reading Comprehension and Written Expression subtests can be used to provide a composite score for Written Language.

Describe the age range: Ages 5-21

State the purpose of the instrument: The purpose is to provision an individual comprehensive measurement of writing and reading language skills for children.

Describe the examiner qualifications: Examiners need experience in "psycho-educational assessments for children" (de Fur, 2014)

List the types of scores (such as standard scores, percentile rank, etc.) that are available:

Raw scores are convertible to standard scores for percentile ranks, confidence intervals and grade scores. There are also composite scores.

6. List the instrument's technical data regarding validity, reliability and standardization / normative process: Standardization data was based on 2,123 English speaking students aged 5-21. This data was gleaned from 31 states in all of the regions of the major regions of the U.S. census. It accounted for national representations based on parent education, geographics, ethnicity and gender.

The reading comprehension reliability was .96; that for writing ranged from .93 to .99. The validity of the reading portion of the test correlated with the Woodcock Johnson -- III normative update at .86, the writing correlated to the same test at .78.


7. State the approximate administration time: The test takes no more than 30 minutes for the reading and writing sections, respectively, which means no more than 60 minutes altogether.

Explain this instrument's adaptation or uses for students with special needs (such as limited English proficiency or disabilities): The authors of this test considered its results for students with language and speech impediments, and accounted for effect sizes for these groups. Thus, for reading comprehension the effect sizes for these groups is termed "moderate" (de Fur, 2014) and is .66 for the former and .65 for the latter.

9. Describe the strengths of the instrument: The strengths of this assessment are based on the detailed descriptions that it yields about a student's propensity to engage in reading and writing. Such detail includes information that pertains to both intervention as well as diagnostic purposes. Thus, it is both curative and useful as a means of exploring what areas a student needs assistance in reading comprehension and written expression.
