Proposal to Build Cinemas on the University of Lagos Campus

To the University of Lagos,

EbonyLife is at the cusp of a groundbreaking new era of entertainment in Nigeria. It offers a rich, diverse, engaging and award-winning array of fine films, comedies, dramas, talk shows and much more for today’s Nigerian audiences. EbonyLife has partnered with numerous entities over the years to bring culture, enlightenment and entertainment to people in a number of venues. Today, we at EbonyLife want to grow our cinematic presence and partner with the University of Lagos in the development of a 3-screened cinema of 500 sq. meters on the University’s campus.

The purpose of this project is to provide students and employees at the University with the opportunity to be part of the next stage of evolution that is happening at EbonyLife and throughout all Nigeria in the arts and entertainment industry. Being at the forefront of this industry, EbonyLife has created and established considerable expectations among its core audience, which looks for more ways to integrate EbonyLife productions into their own lives and activities.

A cinema is a place where communal experiences can be had, where culture can be celebrated in public, and where discussion and appreciation can be promoted. The University of Lagos is a place of learning, engagement and culture and would fit well with the objectives that EbonyLife aims to achieve. Together, we could develop a relationship that marries the arts produced by EbonyLife with the need for entertainment at a culturally-rich campus.

Because EbonyLife is already positioned at the forefront of Nigerian cinema, having already produced two of the top four grossing Nollywood films in the nation’s history, EbonyLife’s foray into cinema intends to capitalize on the brand’s appeal by providing students and the community a place to see their favorite films on campus.

Nigeria is still under-represented when it comes to the ratio of population to cinema screens, so there is clearly a considerable market opportunity and a chance to fulfill a need for easier access to the cinema. The fact that EbonyLife’s films are in demand among viewers, with one title from EbonyLife Films being responsible for 45% of local revenue, shows that the company is well-situated to be a dynamic force in the industry.

A cinema on the University of Lagos campus would help to advance the aims of the University as well by offering enlightening and intelligent entertainment to students in their downtime while maintaining a progressive vision of how to give students and the community a more integrated lifestyle within the University.

This cinema would benefit both the students and the University community by creating jobs on campus, bringing in revenue for the school, promoting the college’s brand, appeal, and progressive stature among the nation, and providing the school with a relationship that can generate healthy returns for years to come.

Now is the time to act on this advantageous and beneficial plan because a new era is fast approaching in Nigeria, and those who capitalize on it will ride the wave all the way to the glorious shores of financial independence and a celebrated brand identity. By working with EbonyLife, the University of Lagos could cement its stature around the world as a college dedicated to students’ needs in all aspects (social, economical, and educational) while also providing an outlet to the community that fosters the University’s growth and development by maintaining a viable connection to that community in the form of having an arts and entertainment offering that is popular, in demand, and wanted at a high level.

Now is the time to act because now is the time in which the cinema is most needed in Nigeria. Nigerians seek to see the world and enjoy our productions in the context of a larger community. The cinema offers that opportunity. The cinema is also the voice of ideas, the voice of progress, the voice of introspection, and the voice of representation. Through cinematic productions like those established here at EbonyLife, people all over Nigeria have begun to celebrate pride in their culture, their heritage….....
