IBM

International Business Machines Corporation known as IBM is an American corporation with headquarters in Armonk, New York. The firm is a computer hardware as well as software manufacturer and marketer. It also deals in information technology infrastructure and hosting. The firm also offers consulting services in fields such as mainframe as well as nanotechnology. The firm started its operations as Computing Tabulating Recording Company (CTR) in 1911 after a merger bringing together Tabulating Machine Company, International Time Recording Company and Computing Scale Company (IBM, 2007). The firm adopted its name in 1924, a name that was designated to CTR's overseas subsidiaries.

IBM is rated as the second largest employer in the United States in comparison with other firms with 433,362 employees; it also ranked fourth in market capitalization as well as ninth as one of the most profitable companies. Consistent with its large employment base, IBM has established a dozen laboratories around the world and by the beginning of 2013 holds records for the patents it has generated for the last two decades. According to Aswad and Meredith (2005 ), the firm's employees have led to several inventions such as;

Automated teller machine (ATM),

Floppy disk,

Hard disk drive,

Magnetic stripe card

Relational database,

Recruiting and Selection Strategy

IBM selection strategy consists of four stages that include; written test, group discussion, technical interview and human resource.

IBM Written Test

This test is in three parts; the first is matrix test that has 15 questions where one is must spend one minute for every question.

The second part is the number series, which contains 20 questions and the applicant will take 15 minutes. The last part is the Aptitude test with 12 questions where the applicant will have 15 minutes.

IBM Group Discussion

These groups usually have 12 people each. The facilitators provide the discussion topics that could be anything in communication including topics such as, "love marriage vs. arrange marriage" or even the effectiveness of a countries education system. The facilitators ask the participants to introduce themselves then give their opinion about the topic of discussion. This discussion lasts approximately 20 minutes.

IBM Technical Interview Questions

The technical interview questions are in two parts:

1. Questions on C. And Data Structures and this will include questions on

a. WAP to interchange,

b. variables without using the third one

c. Explain quick sort and merge sort algorithms amn derive the time-constraint relation for these.

d. Explain binary searching, Fibonacci search

e. General questions on binary trees, transversals

f. General questions on graphs and their representation.

2. Questions on Operating Systems that include;

a. Demand paging

b. Page faults

c. Replacement algos

d. Thrashing

e. Paged segmentation

f. Segment paging .

In this part of the interview, there are case studies presented to the applicant to solicit their reaction as well as to gage their communication skills. In addition IBM claims that theirs is a culture of inclusion.

Human Resource

During the human resource interview, IBM expects teamwork and team spirit from the applicants and their response is critical in revealing their attitude. This is the last stage of the selection process after which successful applicants are included into the IBM's workforce......
