Relationship of Love in Shakespeare

Within the writings of Shakespeare there are many great loves. Some of the greatest are also the greatest examples as love for purpose. The love between a man and a women are often the avenue by which intrigue transpires into change. Within this work three great loves will be examined and compared, the first The love between Ferdinand and Miranda in Tempest will act as the starting point from which the other two are compared. The second couple is Queen Margaret and the Duke of Suffolk in Henry VI and the third Desdemona and Othello in Othello. It is through these three couples and the works they are the centers of that the demonstration of love as a tool for plot development and intrigue by Shakespeare will be proven.

The love between Ferdinand and Miranda is the pinnacle of the example of love as a dramatists tool. Additionally, the love that Ferdinand, the prince of Naples and Miranda feel for one another is ethereal, as they are drawn to one another through the trick of the spirit Arial at the bidding of Prospero, Miranda's father. "MIRANDA I might call him / A thing divine, for nothing natural / I ever saw so noble. PROSPERO [Aside] It goes on, I see, / As my soul prompts it. Spirit, fine spirit! I'll free thee / Within two days for this." Prospero is showing his appreciation for Arial who has successfully bewitched the two young lovers.

Miranda's first sight of Ferdinand sets in stone her love and admiration for him, as does his of her. Prospero hopes that through the trickery of the storm and the union of these two young people he will be able to regain his rightful place as the Duke of Milan. Ferdinand is so equally bewitched by Miranda that he is blinded of even the grief he should now be feeling for his father and his shipmates.
He asks the Goddess if Miranda is real: "Most sure, the goddess / On whom these airs attend! Vouchsafe my prayer

May know if you remain upon this island;/And that you will some good instruction give / How I may bear me here: my prime request, / Which I do last pronounce, is, O you wonder! / If you be maid or no?" He wishes even with his last wish, and when he should be wishing for the safety of his father to know if Miranda is truly a maid or if she is simply a spirit come to trick him. Yet, Ferdinand does not know that the lady Miranda is not the spirit who has betwixed him.

The love between Ferdinand and Miranda survives the trickery, one can only assume this is the case because they are both as they seem, visions of youth. Theirs is a playful love of youth. They are open and ask one another for loving promises. Even play chess together in a playful manner. "MIRANDA Sweet lord, you play me false. FERDINAND No, my dear'st love, / I would not for the world. MIRANDA Yes, for a score of kingdoms you should wrangle, / And I would call it, fair play."

Though there are definite similarities between the love of Ferdinand and Miranda, Margaret and Suffolk and Desdemona and Othello, the greatest difference is the maturity by which the love is expressed. Desdemona and Othello have a deep committed love despite their serious differences, Othello being a Moor and a black man and Desdemona being a member of the white aristocracy. Yet their love transcends the difficulties of the seriousness of war and difference.

DESDEMONA That I did love the Moor to live with him, / My downright violence and storm of fortunes / May trumpet to the world: my heart's subdued / Even to the very quality of my lord: /.....
