San Antonio River Tunnel is part of the San Antonio Channel Improvement flood protection project. The purpose of this tunnel is to provide protection from a 100-year flood event and provide rain runoff underneath the city leading to the San Antonio River. The project was initiated in 1987 and construction for the tunnel started in September 1993. This project was a coordinated effort between the United States Army Corps of Engineers and the San Antonio River Authority.
The Corps bid on the project on behalf of the River Authority at an overall cost of 111 million dollars The tunnel became operational in August 1996 and was completed in 1999. The tunnel is 140 feet below the ground surface, 24 feet in diameter, and 3.1 miles long.
