This paper reviews of literature on cervical cancer and human papillomavirus (HPV) as a risk factor. It examines potential prevention strategies and discusses recent research findings as well as important conclusions regarding HPV as a major but preventable risk factor for cervical cancer. The etiological connection between the pathogenesis of HPV and cervical cancer is evaluated, and the manner in which the risk factor impacts the epigenetics is analyzed. Statistics and methods of prevention are discussed as the literature is found to support the idea that there have been significant improvements in early detection and epigenetic screening for HPV, which indicates that a reduction of rates of infection is likely to occur should prevention strategies be implemented.
However, the implementation of these strategies will depend upon women and adolescent girls undergoing screening tests. Thus, the research shows that progress has been made in treating and preventing HPV-related cervical cancer, but more studies are needed to see whether these strategies are being accepted and implemented at a cultural level.
